How does the conversion work?
Every pixel becomes a shade of gray, weighted by how bright our eyes see red, green and blue: green counts most, blue least. That is why a blue sky comes out darker than green grass. The photo keeps its full resolution, and transparent areas stay transparent.
Is black and white the same as grayscale?
Here, yes. The result is grayscale: every shade from black to white, not just the two. That is what a black and white photo usually means.
